Google's Mega Deal: Methane Cuts Meet CO2 Removal

Google has entered into its most significant carbon-removal agreement to date, supporting a large-scale project in Brazil designed to simultaneously reduce methane emissions from rice cultivation and capture atmospheric carbon dioxide. This initiative, developed by Terradot, covers more than 200,000 hectares in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, marking the largest enhanced rock-weathering project implemented so far.

The project is notable for being the first at this scale to integrate methane abatement with carbon removal. This dual approach is crucial as methane is a potent greenhouse gas, while carbon dioxide removal addresses historical accumulated emissions. Google aims for this venture to serve as a model for future climate action, emphasizing the need to address both short-lived pollutants and long-term carbon sequestration.

By 2030, the project is expected to generate 1 million metric tons of methane-abatement credits, with an additional 1 million tons of carbon-removal credits anticipated by 2040. The carbon-removal component represents a tenfold increase compared to previous rock-weathering projects. This strategy could potentially be expanded across Brazil's vast rice fields and replicated in other major rice-producing nations like India and Vietnam.

Terradot plans to initiate pilot programs in multiple countries by 2026, with commercial-scale operations commencing in 2028. While specific pricing was not disclosed, the project aims to reduce costs, moving towards a target of $100 per ton of carbon removal, a significant step from current higher verification expenses.
