Google has announced a significant investment of approximately $15.1 billion into Finland's digital infrastructure and artificial intelligence capabilities over the next two years. This represents Google's largest single investment in Europe, intended to meet the growing demand for services such as Gemini, Maps, and YouTube.
The initiative extends beyond data center expansion, with substantial allocations for grid improvements, clean energy development, and battery storage. Finland's favorable cool climate and access to low-carbon electricity make it an attractive location for hyperscalers seeking efficiency and addressing regulatory scrutiny.
This investment includes a 22-year power-purchase agreement supporting the Loviisa nuclear plant's extension. Google is also planning new onshore wind capacity and a 94MW battery facility to ensure energy reliability. Furthermore, $36 million is designated for community upskilling and education in Hamina, Kajaani, Muhos, and Vaala, anticipating the creation of up to 37,000 jobs during the 2027-2028 construction phase.
Google's commitment also encompasses environmental stewardship, with projects focused on regenerating native forests and wetlands, developing recreational trails, and enhancing public amenities like saunas and fishing piers. The company has previously invested around $4 billion in its Hamina data center campus since 2009.
