Google Search Growth Falters Amid AI Shift
30 Oct
Summary
- Alphabet's Class A shares dropped significantly, erasing billions in market value.
- Search revenue growth missed analyst expectations, slowing from previous quarters.
- AI Overviews impact user clicks, a trend Google plans to monetize with ads.

Alphabet's stock experienced a sharp decline, with Class A shares plummeting and erasing hundreds of billions in market value. The primary catalyst was the search business, the company's foundational revenue engine, which reported a 12% increase in revenue to $63.35 billion for the third quarter. This figure fell short of the 15% growth anticipated by analysts, marking a notable slowdown compared to preceding quarters.
The deceleration in search growth, even as query volume reportedly increased, is being linked to the increasing prevalence of AI Overviews. These AI-generated summaries at the top of search results are influencing user behavior, leading to fewer clicks on traditional search links. A Pew Research Center study indicated a significant reduction in clicks when AI summaries were present.
Google is responding by increasing the integration of high-quality advertisements within AI Overviews and AI Mode, aiming to monetize this new feature globally. Despite these efforts, concerns persist about the long-term impact on search advertising revenue. The company's significant capital expenditures, particularly for Google Cloud and AI infrastructure, also contributed to investor apprehension, with free cash flow turning negative in the quarter.
Looking ahead, analysts anticipate that the tougher year-over-year comparisons for search growth may continue through the second quarter of 2027. However, potential growth upticks are expected as early as the first quarter of 2027, partly driven by the expansion of international ads within AI Overviews. The company's long-term ventures, such as Waymo and quantum computing, are not currently factored into valuation models.
