Google Play to Host Rival App Stores!

Google has jointly withdrawn its proposed settlement modifications with Epic Games, paving the way for rival app stores to be integrated directly within the Google Play Store in the United States. This significant development is scheduled to commence by Wednesday, July 22nd. Initially, a judge had mandated this change as a remedy for Google's illegal monopoly over Android applications.

Google's decision to withdraw the settlement modification allows for a focus on its broader global business model evolution, promising greater app store choice and lower prices for developers and users. While the US will see a store-within-a-store approach, other regions may adopt a different 'Registered App Stores' model. Google will provide app and game listings to these third-party stores automatically, unless developers opt out.

To access the Google Play catalog, third-party stores will incur an annual fee of $5,000 for security and policy reviews. Additional requirements include operating exclusively within the US, accepting all eligible developers, and adhering to strict trust and safety policies, with a strict limit on malware distribution. These changes signal a new era of competition and potentially reduced fees in Android app distribution.
