Goldman Sachs: S&P 500 to Surge Despite AI Bubble Fears
22 Oct
Summary
- Goldman Sachs maintains S&P 500 year-end target of 8,000.
- Analyst sees significant earnings growth driving market gains.
- Market enters historically strong period after midterm elections.

Goldman Sachs strategist Ben Snider maintains a year-end S&P 500 target of 8,000, anticipating approximately 4.5% upside from recent levels. For 2027, Snider projects an 8,700 year-end target, implying an 8.75% return from his 2026 projection. He believes these gains will be primarily driven by earnings growth, forecasting S&P 500 earnings to increase by 36% this year, followed by an 11% rise next year.
The current investment outlook precedes a historically favorable period for stocks, especially in the wake of midterm elections. Data since 1938 indicates that the S&P 500 has generated positive returns 95% of the time from November through November of the subsequent year following midterm elections. Furthermore, the fourth quarter of midterm election years has historically been the strongest, with the index rising 84% of the time since 1950, averaging a 6.6% gain.
Historically, strong fourth-quarter performance in midterm election years tends to carry into the following year. The first quarter after midterm elections has seen an average S&P 500 gain of 7.4%, with positive returns occurring 95% of the time. The second quarter also typically performs well, averaging a 5% annual return.
While earnings growth is seen as the primary driver, the potential for multiple expansion also exists. Despite concerns about an AI bubble, forward-looking metrics suggest the S&P 500 is attractively valued. Its forward P/E ratio is below 19, significantly lower than the 65 times seen before the dot-com bubble. The index's PEG ratio is also at a 30-year low, around 0.7, indicating substantial growth potential relative to its price.
Even Nvidia, the S&P 500's largest constituent, presents a compelling valuation with a forward P/E of 13.7 and a PEG of 0.33. A re-rating of Nvidia to a market multiple could significantly boost the S&P 500. The current market conditions, characterized by attractive forward metrics and a historically strong seasonal trend, suggest it is an opportune time to invest in stocks, with long-term wealth accumulation favored by staying invested rather than attempting market timing.
