Crude Oil Surge Sends Gold Prices Tumbling
18 May
Summary
- Gold and silver prices declined on Monday morning.
- Higher crude oil prices boosted demand for the US dollar.
- Geopolitical tensions in West Asia elevated crude oil prices.

Gold prices on the MCX experienced a decline on Monday morning, with June futures for gold falling by 0.43% and July futures for silver dropping by 1.24%. This decrease coincided with a significant jump in crude oil prices.
The rise in crude oil prices, notably Brent Crude surpassing $111 per barrel due to a drone attack near a UAE nuclear facility, intensified inflation concerns. This surge in oil prices also bolstered demand for the US dollar, causing the dollar index to rise by over 0.10%.
A stronger dollar makes gold, which is priced in U.S. dollars, more expensive for buyers using other currencies, thereby suppressing demand for the yellow metal. This effect is compounded by ongoing tensions between the US and Iran, which have kept oil prices elevated for over two months.
These persistent high oil prices are stoking fears of a further inflation flare-up, with US retail inflation already posting its largest annual jump in three years. If inflation continues to rise, the US Federal Reserve may be compelled to implement interest rate hikes. Gold, often considered a hedge against inflation, tends to perform poorly in an environment of rising interest rates due to its nature as a non-yielding asset.
