GM Halts Electric Truck Plans Indefinitely
22 Apr
Summary
- GM indefinitely delays next-gen electric truck program.
- New hybrid Silverado and Sierra models planned.
- GM evaluating extended-range EV system with suppliers.

General Motors is indefinitely postponing its upcoming program for next-generation full-size electric trucks, originally slated for a 2028 start. This decision affects planned electric versions of popular models like the GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado, as well as the Escalade IQ and Hummer SUV and pickup.
Suppliers have reportedly been informed that the program is halted with no revised timeline issued. This development follows recent layoffs at GM's Factory Zero in Detroit, which produces current electric trucks, attributed to slowing EV sales. The automaker has not disclosed any future plans or timing for these next-generation electric vehicles.
Instead, GM is anticipated to proceed with plug-in hybrid variants of the Silverado and Sierra, to be manufactured at a separate Michigan facility. The company is also reportedly in discussions with suppliers regarding an extended-range EV propulsion system, which utilizes a small combustion engine to recharge the battery, potentially encouraging broader EV adoption.
