LNG Crisis: Hormuz Tensions Spark Unprecedented Global Shock
3 Mar
Summary
- LNG crisis enters unprecedented era due to U.S.-Iran conflict.
- Strait of Hormuz, vital for 20% of global LNG, faces disruption.
- Pakistan heavily reliant on Qatari LNG faces significant risk.

A Japanese liquefied natural gas (LNG) expert has declared that the global LNG crisis is escalating into an "unprecedented era." This critical juncture is attributed to the heightened U.S.-Iran conflict, which has led to targeted actions against ships traversing the Strait of Hormuz.
This vital maritime passage accounts for roughly 20% of the world's LNG supply, including significant shipments from Qatar and the UAE. An expert noted this situation is far more severe than previous crises, such as the one involving Ukraine and Russia.
If shipping through the Strait of Hormuz were suspended for up to a year, the resulting "demand destruction" would disproportionately affect countries heavily reliant on specific supply routes. Pakistan, for instance, imports approximately 99% of its LNG from Qatari cargoes, making it particularly vulnerable to any disruptions.
