Global Investors Shift Billions from US Stocks Overseas
30 Aug
Summary
- Global long-only funds sold $284 billion in US stocks over 12 months.
- International markets, particularly Asia-Pacific, received significant new investments.
- Emerging market ETFs recorded record inflows in the first half of 2026.

Global long-only funds have significantly shifted capital away from U.S. equities, divesting a net $284 billion over the 12 months ending in March 2026. Concurrently, these funds made substantial purchases in international markets, including $119 billion in Asia-Pacific (excluding Japan) and approximately $71.7 billion in emerging markets.
Despite this outflow, U.S. equity exchange-traded funds (ETFs) attracted a considerable $441 billion in the first half of 2026. However, internationally diversified ETFs captured 34% of total equity ETF inflows, a disproportionate share given their smaller asset base. Emerging market ETFs alone saw a record-breaking $38 billion in inflows during the same period.
