Summary
- Hundreds of flats and retirement homes approved for former gasworks.
- A large supermarket and commercial space also part of the development.
- Developer contributions include funds for local amenities and spaces.

Plans for a significant redevelopment of the former SGN gasworks near The Strand in Gillingham have received unanimous approval from Medway Council's planning committee. Blueberry Developments Estates secured the go-ahead for a project that will transform the Pier Road site, including the removal of the iconic blue gasometer.
The approved plans encompass 500 new apartments across seven blocks, alongside a separate building designated for 140 retirement-living apartments or a care home. Additionally, the development will include a substantial 20,000 sq ft supermarket, 16,000 sq ft of commercial space, and an SGN training office and depot.
Councillor Adam Price supported the development, citing the need for more housing and later-living accommodation. However, he emphasized the importance of securing continued public access to the River Medway through local clubs. Residents had raised objections concerning the density, building height, and impact on local services.
The council highlighted developer contributions totaling £480,000, earmarked for refurbishing The Strand Lido, enhancing local open spaces, and upgrading the Pier Road bus shelter. A unique profit-sharing clause will allow the council to reclaim half of any profits exceeding Blueberry Developments' current estimates once 90% of properties are sold, with these funds directed towards other projects.
