GE9X Engine Durability Issue Won't Delay Boeing 777X Launch

Summary
- GE9X engine durability issue will not impact Boeing 777X service entry.
- A redesigned mid-seal component has been incorporated into current production.
- GE Aerospace anticipates FAA certification within months for the updated part.
GE Aerospace confirmed that a durability issue identified in its GE9X engine will not impact the planned 2027 entry into service for Boeing's 777X aircraft. The company made these remarks on Thursday at a Morgan Stanley conference.
The issue involved the engine's mid-seal, a critical component connecting the front and rear sections. Testing revealed the original design did not meet durability expectations, leading GE Aerospace to develop an updated version. Engines featuring this revised seal began shipping to Boeing during the third quarter.
GE Aerospace first disclosed this potential problem in February, later identifying the root cause and completing a corrective design. Internal testing has supported the company's confidence in the redesigned part. FAA certification for the updated component is anticipated within the next few months.
In a separate development, GE Aerospace stated that its recent $11.75 billion acquisition of Consolidated Precision Products is aimed at bolstering supplies of precision-cast engine components. The company clarified this is not a move toward broader vertical integration across its aerospace operations.
