Summary
- FSSAI issued notices to six beverage brands for misbranding.
- Brands marketed drinks using 'energy drink' descriptors.
- No official FSSAI standard exists for 'energy drinks'.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has recently issued notices to several beverage companies for misbranding and making misleading claims about their products marketed as 'energy drinks'. This action has affected six prominent brands, including Red Bull, Adrenaline Rush, Campa Gold Boost, Sting, Hell Energy, and Monster Energy.
FSSAI pointed out that these brands have been using terms like 'energy drink' on their product branding and labeling. However, the regulator clarified that no official standard has been established for 'Energy Drink' or similar products under FSSAI regulations. The Food Category System is not intended for product naming or labeling.
Furthermore, FSSAI emphasized that functional or therapeutic claims, such as 'vitalizes body and mind' or 'enhancing focus,' are not permitted for food products under the FSS Act 2006. The food regulator has been actively informing consumers about such notices via social media to ensure food safety across India.
