French Wine Exports Tumble Amid US Tariffs
10 Feb
Summary
- French wine and spirits exports fell 8% in value last year.
- US tariffs caused a 21% drop in French wine exports to the US.
- France's wine sector faces over-production and declining demand.

French wine and spirits exports saw a substantial decline in value by 7.9 percent last year, reaching 14.3 billion euros. The United States, a key market, experienced a dramatic 21 percent decrease in shipments due to imposed tariffs and unfavorable exchange rates. Overall exports to the US, which represent 21 percent of the market, were heavily impacted by these commercial conflicts and geopolitical tensions.
Beyond the US, French spirits exports also suffered a 17.4 percent slump, significantly affected by Chinese anti-dumping measures. Cognac sales, in particular, dove 23.8 percent. This challenging export environment coincides with domestic issues for the French wine sector, including over-production and falling demand. To address this, the French government has initiated a 130-million-euro fund to subsidize the uprooting of unprofitable grape vines, a move supported by President Macron as necessary for sector revitalization.
