18 May
Summary
- West Asia tensions impact India's fuel prices and electricity demand.
- PM Surya Ghar Yojana offers free electricity by installing solar panels.
- Government provides substantial subsidy for 3kW solar panel systems.

Western Asia's escalating tensions are directly impacting India's energy sector, leading to increased costs for consumers. This situation has exacerbated demand for electricity due to severe heatwaves, resulting in higher utility bills.
The Indian government's PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana presents a proactive solution for citizens looking to mitigate these rising costs.
This initiative promotes energy independence by enabling households to generate their own electricity from solar power. The scheme is designed not only to cover basic electricity needs like lighting and fans but also to support the charging of electric vehicles, aligning with the growing trend of electric mobility.
For middle-class families, a 3kW solar panel system is recommended, capable of generating approximately 300-360 units of electricity monthly. This system is ideal for households with moderate appliance usage, including fans, refrigerators, and air conditioners.
To encourage adoption, the government is offering a substantial subsidy of up to ₹78,000 for these 3kW systems, which will be directly credited to beneficiaries' bank accounts.
Interested individuals can register on the national portal pmsuryaghar.gov.in by providing state, electricity company, and consumer details. After selecting the appropriate system capacity and installation by a registered vendor, and upon completion of net-metering, the subsidy will be disbursed.
