Fort Lauderdale Galleria Mall Gets Green Light for Mega Project

Fort Lauderdale has given its unanimous approval to a substantial mixed-use redevelopment of the Galleria mall, a project spearheaded by Russell Galbut and his partners through GFO Investments. The colossal plan involves eight 30-story towers and will introduce 3,144 residential units to the area. This approval follows an eighteen-month application process.

The project, named Galleria West and Galleria East, will feature 1,981 units in five towers and 1,163 units in three additional towers. It includes a significant component of workforce housing, comprising 800 units in Galleria West and 473 units in Galleria East. The development also incorporates 170 hotel rooms, retail spaces, and restaurant areas, with a $100 million investment planned.

Galbut and his partners acquired the 800,000-square-foot mall for $73 million, a notable discount. Despite facing opposition from over 200 residents concerned about traffic and infrastructure strain, the city's approval marks a significant step. Galbut believes the redevelopment will contribute to housing affordability and potentially alleviate traffic by reducing commutes.

This development is part of a broader initiative under the Live Local Act. In separate Live Local matters, Galbut anticipates construction on the Nema project in Edgewater to commence in the second quarter of next year, which will include residential units and a Lifetime gym.
