Ford's Massive Recall Problem Dwarfs Competition
17 Apr
Summary
- Ford recalled 19.5 million vehicles, far exceeding other automakers.
- Recalls have cost Ford hundreds of millions, potentially billions.
- CEO Farley lobbies against Chinese EVs while facing quality issues.

Ford is grappling with a colossal vehicle recall issue, having recalled 19.5 million vehicles between April 2025 and March 2026. This staggering number significantly exceeds those of other automakers selling in the U.S., with Toyota a distant second at 4.2 million recalls.
The extensive recalls have already imposed significant financial burdens on Ford, costing hundreds of millions of dollars and impacting earnings. Last year alone, the company took a $600 million charge for a fuel injector recall, with CEO Jim Farley recently stating the issue is costing billions and alienating customers.
Amidst this internal challenge, Farley is also vocal about external threats, urging the U.S. government to block Chinese electric vehicles from entering the American market. He expressed concerns that these cheaper, better-equipped EVs, partly subsidized by the Chinese government, pose a significant threat to domestic automakers. However, Farley also sees potential in Chinese joint ventures for advancing Ford's own EV sector.
Despite lobbying efforts to keep Chinese EVs out, Farley's primary immediate challenge remains the poor quality of Ford's own vehicles, a stark contrast to his public stance on foreign competition.
