In Mumbai, the Central Railway (CR) has taken a significant step to facilitate the demolition of the Sion railway overbridge. The railway has constructed a 56-metre-long and 3-metre-wide foot overbridge adjacent to the Sion overbridge, which is now open for public use.
The construction of the foot overbridge has removed the main obstacle that was hindering the demolition of the Sion railway overbridge. With this alternative in place, CR plans to completely demolish the Sion overbridge within the next 3 months.
The closure of the Sion overbridge had previously caused numerous difficulties for locals and pedestrians commuting east-west. Drivers and pedestrians were forced to take lengthy detours, as the area around the bridge is home to schools, colleges, and hospitals. However, the new foot overbridge on the Dharavi side of the Sion overbridge has now provided an alternative for passengers to commute in the east-west direction.
The Chief Public Relations Officer of CR, Dr. Swapnil Nila, has stated that the foot overbridge construction is complete and the bridge is now open for public use. This development is expected to significantly ease the commute for residents in the area as the demolition of the Sion railway overbridge progresses.
