Fintech Sues Firewall Giant Over Data Breach
24 Feb
Summary
- Marquis sues SonicWall over data breach leading to ransomware.
- Hackers allegedly used stolen firewall data to breach Marquis.
- Hundreds of thousands affected by stolen customer data.

Fintech firm Marquis has initiated a lawsuit against its firewall provider, SonicWall, asserting that a previous breach exposed critical data about customer firewalls. This alleged compromise enabled hackers to conduct a ransomware attack on Marquis' network. The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, claims SonicWall's failure to secure its backup service resulted in significant financial and reputational damage to Marquis.
Marquis alleges that the hackers exploited information stolen from SonicWall, including emergency passcodes, to bypass security measures and access Marquis' internal network. The stolen data reportedly includes personally identifiable information and financial details of customers of Marquis' financial institution clients, affecting an estimated 400,000 individuals nationwide. This number is expected to increase as more notifications are filed.
SonicWall had previously admitted to a breach in mid-September 2025, initially stating a small percentage of backup files were exfiltrated, later conceding all customer firewall backup files were compromised. Marquis began notifying affected individuals in December 2025. Marquis suggests a code change in February 2025 created a vulnerability, allowing unauthorized access to backup files. SonicWall has not yet provided details on the root cause of its breach, with Marquis hoping to uncover more through litigation.
