Fifth Third Bancorp announced a rise in first-quarter adjusted profit, boosted by a strong performance in net interest income and its capital markets division. The bank's net interest income, a key measure of profitability, saw a notable increase of over 34% to $1.93 billion compared to the previous year.
Net interest margins expanded by 27 basis points in the first three months of 2026, indicating enhanced profitability from lending activities. Average portfolio loans and leases grew significantly to $157.63 billion from $121.27 billion a year earlier. The Cincinnati, Ohio-based institution also reported a 49% surge in capital markets fees, reaching $134 million, largely due to client financial risk management revenue.
CEO Tim Spence highlighted that early financial benefits from a recent multibillion-dollar acquisition are evident, including margin expansion and tangible book value per share growth. Fifth Third's adjusted net income available to common shareholders reached $731 million, up from $502 million a year prior. The bank also noted limited exposure to private credit amidst investor concerns about transparency and liquidity.
