FERC Approves Expedited Power Plan Amid Demand Surge
19 Jun
Summary
- FERC approved PJM's expedited track for new power projects.
- The process aims to meet rising electricity demand from AI and electrification.
- Approved projects could be operational within three years.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has given the green light to PJM Interconnection's expedited interconnection track. This new process is designed to speed up the integration of significant new power generation projects. The approval comes as electricity demand in the U.S. is projected to continue its record-setting climb through 2027, largely fueled by AI data centers and increased electrification. PJM will review up to 10 interconnection requests per year under this expedited framework. These requests must be for large new or uprated capacity resources and include commitments from relevant state authorities to facilitate siting. This initiative is crucial for maintaining grid reliability amidst escalating power consumption. PJM CEO David Mills highlighted that this pathway is vital for bringing qualified, shovel-ready generation projects online swiftly. The expedited track is expected to enable projects to secure interconnection agreements within 10 months and achieve operational status within three years. The FERC order officially takes effect on July 31, and this accelerated process will conclude at the end of 2027.
