Summary
- FDA and MHRA will enhance collaboration on medical devices, AI, and medicines.
- Reciprocal liaison officers will improve cross-Atlantic regulatory alignment.
- New initiative aims to speed patient access to safe and effective products.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) are establishing a formal collaboration to merge their expertise and shape future global healthcare regulations. This program will focus on critical areas such as medical devices, artificial intelligence (AI), and innovative medicines.
By appointing reciprocal liaison officers, the agencies intend to boost daily cooperation, scientific exchange, and the management of evolving regulatory challenges. This enhanced partnership is designed to speed up patient access to safe and effective products on both sides of the Atlantic.
This initiative builds on a prior commitment to deepen cooperation on medical device regulation and follows the UK-US pharmaceutical trade and pricing agreement implemented in April 2026. The MHRA is also finalizing a new AI regulatory framework, informed by extensive stakeholder consultations.
This regulatory alignment is anticipated to reduce red tape, encouraging companies to invest, innovate, and grow. Both the FDA and MHRA aim to respond more effectively to scientific and technological advancements, ensuring continued product safety and efficacy.
