The Next Ozempic? Peptides Eye Mainstream FDA Green Light

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is poised to make a significant decision regarding wellness peptides. On July 23 and 24, the agency's compounding advisory committee will review seven specific peptides, such as BPC-157 and TB-500, which are currently popular in biohacking communities. The committee's decision could allow specialty pharmacies to legally compound these substances, potentially creating a new multibillion-dollar industry similar to the one surrounding compounded GLP-1 drugs.

Telehealth companies, including Hims & Hers, are anticipating this shift and are preparing to expand their offerings. Hims & Hers, which previously navigated challenges with compounded Ozempic, sees peptides as its next major growth area. Industry leaders estimate the addressable peptide market, encompassing various health optimization uses, to be around $30 billion.

A significant concern surrounding this potential expansion is the lack of comprehensive long-term safety data, particularly for users who combine multiple peptide compounds. Unlike single-dose medications, many popular peptides lack extensive clinical trial data and are often sold as research chemicals outside traditional drug approval pathways.

Experts predict a rapid influx of telehealth providers offering peptide programs. This will likely be followed by a consolidation phase where well-established platforms will outcompete smaller operators, leading to either acquisitions or market exits. The core issue remains whether demand for peptides will flow through regulated channels or persist in the gray market.
