FDA Approves New Tobacco Vape Flavor, Caution Remains
13 Mar
Summary
- FDA licensed one new vape brand, exclusively in tobacco flavor.
- The agency maintains a cautious approach to flavored vapes.
- Only 41 vape products are currently permitted for sale in the US.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted a license for sale to an additional vape brand, specifically for its tobacco flavor. This action underscores the agency's ongoing cautious approach to flavored vaping products.
Currently, only 41 vape products are legally permitted for sale in the United States, all of which are either tobacco or menthol flavored. The FDA's latest authorization, as of March 12, includes a device and pod from Glas, but only its tobacco variant.
Glas founder Sean Greenbaum expressed confidence that other flavors would also gain approval, aligning with new FDA guidance issued on Monday. This guidance adjusts the agency's strict stance, potentially easing market access for more products.
The FDA stated it would still require substantial evidence of benefits to smokers for flavors appealing to youth. However, less stringent proof will be needed for flavors with lower known youth appeal. Critics worry this could lead to more products addicting young people, while proponents believe it could help smokers and compete with unregulated e-cigarettes.
