Akhilesh Maurya, an ITI graduate from Mau, Uttar Pradesh, has achieved remarkable financial success through organic cucumber farming. Maurya's venture, which began in March with the planting of cucumber saplings using the raised-bed farming method and a drip irrigation system, started yielding harvests in early May. The horticulture department provided guidance, encouraging him to focus on organic cultivation and crop diversification. He is cultivating varieties such as Syngenta, Clause's Arno, and Delhi's SIR.
During the harvesting period, which began in early May, Maurya's farm yielded between 7 to 8 quintals of cucumbers daily. The market price for cucumbers, initially around Rs 14-15 per kilogram, rose to over Rs 20 per kilogram, significantly contributing to his substantial earnings. This success story exemplifies the increasing number of educated young individuals turning to agriculture and horticulture for income generation.
