Luxury Assets Boom: Family Offices Seek Inflation Hedge
16 Oct
Summary
- Nearly two-thirds of family offices hold inflation-hedging luxury assets.
- Tangible assets like watches and art saw significant growth.
- AI remains the top investment theme for family offices.

A recent survey indicates a significant shift, with nearly two-thirds of single-family offices now holding luxury assets uncorrelated to their broader investment portfolios. These investments, including watches, fine jewelry, art, and even sports and music rights, are seen as potential inflation hedges. This trend is particularly notable as inflation and potential central bank missteps were identified as top risks for the next five years.
While assets offering flexible pricing and recurring cash flows are gaining traction, tangible items like watches and art have experienced the most substantial year-over-year growth. This mirrors a strategy similar to investing in gold, aiming for stability against market volatility, geopolitical tensions, and inflation. Despite mixed long-term research on luxury assets as investments, recent performance data shows stability in categories like fine art and watches, though fine wine has seen a decline.
Artificial intelligence, however, remains the dominant investment theme for family offices. For the third consecutive year, AI was cited by 68% of respondents as the most compelling investment theme for the next five years, underscoring its continued importance in wealth management strategies.
The value of these luxury assets is increasingly tied to their ability to signal wealth and exclusivity, reflecting a broader economic trend where the affluent are spending more. This 'conspicuous consumption' suggests that specific tastes and perceived value, rather than inherent utility, drive the market for high-end goods.
