ExxonMobil Eyes Trinidad for Guyana-Like Oil Bonanza
15 Oct
Summary
- ExxonMobil secured exploration rights in a large deepwater block near Guyana.
- The company aims to replicate its successful Guyana oil development strategy in Trinidad.
- Exxon's existing strong financial performance does not rely on Trinidad's success.

ExxonMobil is targeting Trinidad and Tobago for its next significant offshore oil discovery. The company has secured exploration rights to a vast deepwater block, TTUD-1, spanning over 7,000 square kilometers.
This area is considered a geological extension of Exxon's highly successful Guyana operations, where it and its partners have discovered approximately 11 billion barrels of recoverable oil. Guyana's production reached 900,000 barrels per day by late 2025.
Exxon plans to select its first drilling location by mid-2027, with an exploration well potentially following in late 2027 or early 2028. This initiative represents an additional growth prospect, not a dependency for the company.
Exxon reported $14.5 billion in earnings for Q2 2026, with strong operating and free cash flow. The company also returned $9.4 billion to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases during the same quarter.
Existing operations, including expansion in the Permian Basin and a new offshore vessel in Guyana, are already boosting production. Therefore, a disappointing exploration outcome in Trinidad would not negatively impact Exxon's established profitability or cash generation.
