Guyana Oil Bonanza: Exxon Recoups Billions
1 Aug
Summary
- ExxonMobil has fully recovered its $55 billion investment in Guyana's oilfield.
- Guyana's Stabroek Block, discovered in 2015, holds at least 11 billion barrels.
- The country faces economic diversification challenges despite oil wealth.

An ExxonMobil-led joint venture has successfully recovered the billions invested in developing a substantial oilfield in Guyana. The Stabroek Block, discovered in 2015 and estimated to contain at least 11 billion barrels of oil equivalent, has become a cornerstone of Exxon's portfolio.
Approximately $55 billion has been invested since 2014. Due to rapid development, these costs were recouped about two years sooner than anticipated. Under the production sharing contract, the consortium splits profit oil evenly with Guyana after covering costs.
Exxon, which operates the block with a 45% interest, will now see its daily oil allocation from Guyana decrease. However, its free cash flow is projected to double by 2025 compared to 2020 levels. The consortium's fifth and sixth projects, Uaru and Whiptail, are slated to commence production this year and next.
Despite this oil-driven economic growth, Guyana faces significant hurdles in diversifying its economy beyond petroleum and addressing issues such as infrastructure deficits and electricity supply challenges for its population of around 1 million.
