Europe Faces Winter Gas Shortage Risk
6 May
Summary
- Europe's gas storage is 6% below seasonal norm.
- Middle East conflict damages Qatar's LNG production.
- Reaching 80% storage levels before winter is unlikely.

Europe is projected to struggle in replenishing its gas storage to the targeted 80% capacity before the upcoming winter. As of May 6, 2026, storage sites are only about 30% full, a deficit of six percentage points below the normal seasonal level.
This situation is exacerbated by supply disruptions stemming from the Middle East conflict. Damage to Qatar's liquefied natural gas (LNG) production facilities could take up to five years to repair, significantly impacting global exports. This unforeseen event alters previous expectations of an LNG glut this decade.
The CFO of Equinor highlighted that current market price spreads, where near-term contracts are pricier than those for next winter, do not offer sufficient incentives for gas injection. Consequently, Europe's gas market is anticipated to remain vulnerable to weather events and operational challenges throughout the winter season.
