Investor Warns: Europe Risks Strategic Vulnerability
17 Jul
Summary
- Europe's reliance on US tech and capital is a strategic risk.
- New resilience fund targets dual-use and defence technology.
- Investor urges European defence firms to merge for growth.

Europe faces a growing strategic vulnerability due to its significant reliance on American technology and capital, according to a leading European tech investor.
Klaus Hommels, founder of Lakestar, highlighted concerns that Europe needs to foster greater technological independence, particularly in light of US restrictions on advanced AI models. His firm has launched a $300 million "resilience" fund aimed at investing in dual-use and defense technology companies within Europe and other NATO-allied countries. This initiative has attracted investment from entities like the UK's BAE Systems.
Investor interest in defense technology has surged following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Lakestar has supported several European defense startups, including drone interceptor company Cambridge Aerospace and drone firm Helsing. Hommels plans to personally invest over €100 million in defense startups this year, underscoring the urgent need for Europe to bolster its resilience, irrespective of political shifts in the US.
Hommels advocates for European governance over defense tech investments and encourages mergers among European defense tech firms to create stronger competitors capable of securing procurement deals. He believes Europe's ability to mobilize private capital provides a significant advantage over geopolitical rivals.
