EU EV Sales Surge, Hybrid Dominates Market

Battery electric vehicles represented 16.4% of new car registrations across the EU between January and October 2025. This signifies a substantial rise compared to the same period in 2024, with over 1.47 million new EVs registered. Germany was the top market for EV uptake, while Spain recorded the most significant growth rate among the EU's major economies.
Hybrid-electric vehicles maintained their popularity, securing the largest market share at 34.6%. Traditional petrol and diesel models saw their combined share decrease to 36.6%, down from 46.3% a year prior. Several manufacturers experienced sales increases, including Volkswagen Group, BMW, Mercedes, and Renault.
In contrast, Stellantis, Toyota, and Hyundai reported sales declines. Notably, Chinese automaker BYD witnessed an exceptional 240% surge in its EU year-to-date sales. While some countries saw impressive EV registration growth, others, including Croatia and Estonia, experienced a decrease in new EV registrations.
