26 Sep
Summary
- EU energy chief warns of a price crisis linked to supply issues.
- Countries urged to take measures to curb energy demand.
- EU better prepared for winter than in 2021, but needs more prep.
The European Union is currently grappling with a significant energy price crisis, exacerbated by disruptions in oil and gas markets. This situation has led EU energy commissioner Dan Jorgensen to communicate an urgent warning to member states.
In a letter, Jorgensen highlighted that the bloc is facing a dual crisis of both price and supply. He strongly advised energy ministers to consider and implement measures aimed at curbing energy demand and supporting gas storage injections throughout the necessary period.
While acknowledging that the EU is in a stronger position regarding energy preparedness compared to the winter of 2021, when Russia significantly curtailed gas supplies, Jorgensen stressed the need for continued and enhanced preparations. Governments are urged to maintain efforts to secure energy resources for the upcoming winter months.
