Summary
- Equitas Small Finance Bank shares dropped 30% after CEO's resignation.
- Founder PN Vasudevan resigned due to a conflict of interest.
- Nilesh Shah believes technology-driven businesses will lead market growth.
Equitas Small Finance Bank's shares saw a significant 30% correction, falling from ₹70 to approximately ₹50, after Founder and CEO PN Vasudevan announced his resignation. This market reaction resulted in a ₹2,000 crore reduction in market capitalization. Vasudevan cited a conflict of interest, as his daughter is a co-promoter of another non-banking financial company (NBFC), as the reason for his departure, aiming to unlock the bank's value.
Nilesh Shah, Founder of Envision Capital, suggested that the market may have overreacted to Vasudevan's resignation. He posited that a family member leading another NBFC is not inherently problematic, provided there are no undisclosed transactions. Shah reassured that Vasudevan's decision is final and that the bank is now seeking a successor, with long-term growth and asset quality remaining on track.
Looking ahead, Shah identified the "new economy," specifically consumer fintech, healthcare, and technology-enabled businesses, as the most promising investment theme for the upcoming year. He emphasized that companies possessing a strong DNA of technology and innovation are poised to be the market's future disruptors and champions.
