11 Oct
Summary
- EPFO wage ceiling increased to ₹25,000 from ₹15,000 starting September 2026.
- Over 51 lakh additional employees will now get social security benefits.
- EPS pension eligibility now depends on monthly salary and prior membership.

Effective September 17, 2026, the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has raised its monthly wage ceiling for mandatory coverage to ₹25,000, an increase from the previous ₹15,000 limit. This significant adjustment is projected to bring statutory social security benefits to over 51 lakh additional employees.
Employees earning between ₹15,000 and ₹25,000 per month, who were previously excluded, will now be mandatorily covered. EPFO has clarified that membership for the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS) is mandatory for those earning ₹25,000 or less, while it is optional for those earning above this threshold.
Employer contributions involve a 12% allocation of eligible wages. Of this, 8.33% is designated for the EPS, subject to the applicable wage ceiling, with the remainder going to the EPF. For example, on a ₹25,000 monthly wage, the EPS portion amounts to ₹2,082.50. Employees should verify their specific eligibility and membership history.
