Summary
- Eni secured a 50% stake and operatorship in the OFF-5 block.
- The company also acquired a 40% stake in the adjacent OFF-6 block.
- Significant capital spending is required before potential hydrocarbon returns.

Eni S.p.A. has significantly increased its offshore exploration activities in Uruguay through recent agreements.
The Italian energy company announced on August 29, 2026, that it entered into an agreement to secure a 50% share and operatorship of the OFF-5 exploration block. This deal was made with YPF's subsidiary Miwen SA and Uruguay's national oil company Ancap.
In addition to the OFF-5 block, Eni recently finalized an accord to acquire a 40% stake in the neighboring OFF-6 block, which is currently operated by APA Corporation. Eni will become a strategic partner and is set to fund the majority of the initial exploration well planned for the upcoming year.
These ventures align with Eni's strategy to strengthen its upstream portfolio and expand its presence in South America. The company aims to leverage its proprietary technologies to accelerate exploration in OFF-5. However, it is crucial to note that these are exploration opportunities and not producing assets, involving substantial capital expenditure with no guarantee of commercial hydrocarbon discovery.
The success of these exploration programs will heavily influence the eventual economic returns for Eni, as significant costs for seismic studies and drilling are anticipated before any reserves can be confirmed.
