Emory University Triples Bitcoin Holdings in Crypto Embrace
15 Nov
Summary
- Emory University holds over 1 million shares of Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust
- Endowment stake in Bitcoin ETF now worth nearly $52 million
- University also increases investment in BlackRock's gold ETF

As of November 15, 2025, Emory University has substantially increased its exposure to cryptocurrencies, particularly Bitcoin. The private research university based in Georgia now holds over 1 million shares of the Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust, a significant jump from the 500,000 shares it held just three months prior.
This latest move by Emory's endowment managers reflects a growing comfort with digital assets, as the university's Bitcoin-linked investment is now valued at nearly $52 million, though the current market price is lower than the September 30th valuation. Emory first disclosed a position in Grayscale's trust back in October 2024, initially worth just over $15 million.
Alongside its expanding Bitcoin holdings, Emory has also modestly increased its equity stake in crypto exchange Coinbase, now holding nearly 4,500 shares worth close to $1.2 million. The university's endowment has also made a new investment in BlackRock's iShares Gold Trust, with a position valued at $79 million as of the end of the third quarter.
These strategic moves by Emory's endowment managers signal a broader shift among institutional investors, who are gradually warming up to the idea of incorporating cryptocurrencies and other alternative assets into their portfolios, even if they remain a relatively small portion of the overall investment mix.
