Emcure Consolidates Gennova: Biologics Focus Ahead
13 Jul
Summary
- Emcure Pharma acquired remaining 12.05% stake in Gennova Biopharma.
- Gennova's mRNA business transferred to Immunoscript Life Science.
- Samit Mehta appointed CEO to drive biologics and biosimilars.

Emcure Pharmaceuticals recently completed the full acquisition of Gennova Biopharmaceuticals by purchasing the remaining 12.05% minority stake. This consolidation allows Gennova to intensify its strategic focus on developing biologics and biosimilars. Earlier this month, Gennova transferred its mRNA business to Immunoscript Life Science for ₹139.5 crore through a slump sale. This move facilitates a clearer specialization for Gennova in its core biotechnology operations.
Samit Mehta has assumed leadership as the chief executive officer of Gennova. Under his guidance, the company will pursue a three-pronged strategy: scaling its existing biologics, expanding its biosimilars pipeline, and exploring adjacent therapeutic areas leveraging its biomanufacturing capabilities. Gennova's commercial biologics portfolio includes therapies for thrombosis, anemia, and chemotherapy support.
Gennova's historical contributions include developing GEMCOVAC-19, India's first indigenous mRNA COVID-19 vaccine, notable for its 2-8°C storage requirement. The recent ownership consolidation is expected to have no material impact on Emcure's consolidated financials, capital allocation, or R&D investments.
