Nobel winner dares Musk: Give away $1 trillion by 2036!

Nobel Prize winner Daron Acemoglu has issued a public challenge to Elon Musk regarding his repeated assertions that artificial intelligence will render money largely irrelevant in the future.

Acemoglu proposed that if Musk truly believes his predictions, he should pledge to donate his current wealth, estimated at approximately $1 trillion, to charity no later than 2036. He stipulated that an impartial body should vet these charities to ensure they are effective and non-ideological, a condition that complicates Musk's past giving patterns.

Recent financial filings show that the Musk Foundation's donations since 2020 have predominantly gone to entities associated with Musk and his businesses. A significant grant of $370 million, for instance, was directed to a nonprofit operating an elementary school near several of Musk's companies.

Musk's foundation has also faced scrutiny for falling short of the required annual distribution of 5% of its assets, a shortfall that has occurred for four consecutive years. While foundations can make up for missed distributions with later grants, Acemoglu's proposed vetting condition would remove Musk's direct control over these decisions.

Furthermore, Musk is a signatory to the Giving Pledge, committing to donate at least half his fortune, though this commitment is not legally binding. His past statements have also cast doubt on his willingness to give effectively at scale, and historical philanthropic efforts have yielded minimal impact relative to his vast wealth.
