EDLI Insurance: Max Payout Unchanged Despite Wage Hike
2 Oct
Summary
- EPFO wage ceiling increased to Rs 25,000 from Rs 15,000.
- EDLI maximum insurance benefit remains capped at Rs 7 lakh.
- A separate government notification is needed to raise EDLI payout.
Effective September 17, 2026, the EPFO has revised its wage ceiling to Rs 25,000 per month. This means both employers and employees must contribute to EPF, EPS, and EDLI based on wages up to this new limit, an increase from the previous Rs 15,000.
While the higher wage ceiling can increase the calculated EDLI benefit, potentially up to Rs 10.5 lakh based on a Rs 25,000 average monthly wage, the maximum payable assurance benefit is still capped at Rs 7 lakh. This cap is stipulated by the EDLI Scheme, 2026.
To increase the maximum EDLI payout beyond Rs 7 lakh, the government must issue a separate notification amending the scheme's provisions. As of October 2, 2026, there is no indication of such a notification or its effective date.
This revision also impacts employer contributions to EDLI, increasing them from Rs 75 to Rs 125 monthly per employee. However, EDLI is intended as a basic social security benefit, and individuals with higher financial needs should consider supplemental term-life insurance for adequate protection.
