Eurozone's Rich Bros Rule Crypto: ECB Study
15 Apr
Summary
- Crypto ownership in the Eurozone is dominated by men.
- Crypto owners often possess other investments and cash.
- Digital euro privacy may surpass Bitcoin and cash.
An analysis by the European Central Bank (ECB) has investigated the profile of cryptocurrency owners within the Eurozone, as the ECB nears the launch of its digital currency. The research indicates that 67% of crypto holders are male, generally younger individuals with disposable income.
Significant variations exist across member states, with Austria and Ireland showing higher ownership rates, even among older generations, compared to other countries like Italy. The Baltic states and Greece exhibit a strong generational divide, with high Gen-Z ownership but minimal uptake by older demographics.
Further econometric analysis suggests that while gender and age are factors, they often proxy for a general comfort with digital technologies and online payments. Importantly, crypto ownership is found to be complementary to other investments, with owners also more likely to hold significant physical cash.
An interesting distinction emerged between crypto holders and users. While most European crypto owners primarily hold their assets (HODL), a subset actively uses them for payments. These crypto payers, while similar in demographics to HODLers, express a strong preference for cash's privacy, alongside valuing the speed of online transactions and avoiding the burden of carrying physical currency.
The upcoming digital euro aims to offer enhanced privacy features, including offline transactions with cash-like anonymity for balances up to €3000. This level of privacy is noted as potentially superior to Bitcoin's blockchain and even physical cash, positioning the digital euro as an appealing option for current crypto enthusiasts.
