eBay Stock Dips on Bearish Wells Fargo Call
5 Aug
Summary
- Wells Fargo downgraded eBay stock to 'Underweight' with a lowered price target.
- Intensifying competition in fashion resale, particularly from Vinted, is a key concern.
- Analysts expect increased marketing spend to impact eBay's profitability and EPS.

Shares of eBay experienced a slight decline on August 3 following a downgrade by Wells Fargo's senior analyst Ken Gawrelski. Gawrelski moved his rating on EBAY to 'Underweight' and reduced the price target to $92, signaling a potential 5% decrease from recent trading levels.
This bearish outlook is primarily attributed to increased competition within the fashion and apparel resale sector. While eBay's acquisition of Depop is seen as strategically sound, Gawrelski suggests it may negatively impact near-term profitability. European competitor Vinted has notably ramped up its promotional activities in the U.S., rapidly expanding its user base.
In response to Vinted's aggressive expansion, Depop has escalated its own marketing efforts, reportedly spending three times more than Vinted. This promotional war is anticipated by the Wells Fargo analyst to result in significant cash burn for eBay, potentially limiting future stock appreciation.
Gawrelski also adjusted his earnings per share (EPS) forecast for eBay downwards by 10% due to higher customer acquisition costs. He projects Depop's marketing expenditures to reduce Q3 EPS by approximately $0.15. Management is expected to issue guidance on August 5 that reflects notable margin compression, although consensus estimates still predict a year-over-year increase in Q2 EPS.
Despite these concerns, other Wall Street analysts appear to hold a more positive view on EBAY stock. Furthermore, eBay shares currently offer an attractive dividend yield of 1.16%, positioning them as a potentially appealing long-term investment.
