DTE Energy Misses Profit Estimates Amid Trading Loss
1 May
Summary
- DTE Energy reported a loss in its energy trading business.
- The electric utility segment saw a profit increase of $71 million.
- The company plans over $6 billion in infrastructure investments this year.

DTE Energy, a U.S. Midwest utility, reported first-quarter earnings that did not meet analyst expectations. The company's financial results for the January-March period were impacted by a swing to a loss in its energy trading operations.
In contrast to the trading segment's $25 million loss, DTE's electric utility unit, its primary income generator, saw its profit climb to $218 million from $147 million in the same period last year. The gas unit also demonstrated growth, with profits rising nearly 2% to $210 million.
The Detroit-based company is making substantial investments in its infrastructure, having deployed over $1.2 billion during the quarter. DTE Energy has outlined plans to invest more than $6 billion this year, focusing on improving the safety and reliability of its electric and natural gas systems.
This significant investment aligns with a broader industry trend, as U.S. electric utilities are projected to spend $1.4 trillion over the next five years on grid enhancements. These expenditures are driven by increasing electricity demand, an aging infrastructure, and the growing threat of extreme weather events.
The company reaffirmed its full-year operating profit forecast, projecting earnings per share between $7.59 and $7.73. DTE Energy serves approximately 2.3 million electric customers in Southeast Michigan and 1.4 million natural gas customers throughout the state.
