Congo Mines: $6M Fine Stands Despite Operation Halt
7 Nov
Summary
- Chinese-owned CDM must pay $6 million in compensation.
- The fine is for communities affected by a 2025 wastewater spill.
- Operations are suspended, but payment obligations remain.
The Democratic Republic of Congo's mines ministry has reiterated that Chinese-owned miner CDM must fulfill its $6 million compensation obligation to communities impacted by an industrial wastewater spill that occurred in November 2025. This directive comes despite CDM recently announcing a suspension of its operations.
The spill originated from a containment basin at CDM's Lubumbashi operation, contaminating the nearby communities of Kasapa, Kamatete, and Kamisepe. Authorities had previously ordered the company to pay $2 million to each of these affected areas.
CDM, a unit of China's Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt, also faces a $6.6 million penalty payable to the state treasury. The ministry stressed that financial difficulties or operational suspensions do not absolve the company of its commitments to the local populations, stating these must be honored.
