Diwali Rally Ignites Investor Fortunes on Dalal Street
7 Nov
Summary
- Over half of India's prominent investors saw portfolio values rise.
- Eight investors achieved portfolio gains exceeding 50% in a year.
- Significant losses were also recorded, with some portfolios down 64%.

The Diwali fireworks on Dalal Street have illuminated the investment landscape, resulting in a significant rally that boosted benchmark indices by nearly 10% in just seven trading sessions. This surge has brightened the financial outlook for many of India's prominent stock market investors, even amidst a challenging year marked by global economic concerns.
Data indicates that out of 60 tracked investors, 34 (57%) saw their portfolio values increase over the past year, outperforming the Sensex's 4% decline. Notably, eight investors experienced spectacular growth, with their portfolios soaring by over 50%. Another 18 recorded gains between 10% and 50%.
However, fortunes were not universally improved. The portfolios of 27 investors declined, with losses ranging from 3% to a steep 64%. This divergence underscores the volatile nature of the market, even for seasoned participants. Some high-profile investors experienced contrasting outcomes, with Rekha Jhunjhunwala's portfolio rising 19%, while Radhakishan Damani's and Premji's portfolios fell by 20% each.
