Amar Nath, an 83-year-old former mayor of Derby, is retiring from his travel agency, Highcare Travel, after 55 years. He and his wife Nirmal established the business in Pear Tree Road in 1971, three years after immigrating to Britain from Chandigarh, India.
Nath, who served as city mayor from 2010 to 2011, described his role as a travel agent as "more about serving the community rather than running a business." His fluency in Asian languages like Urdu, Punjabi, and Hindi was instrumental in assisting elderly customers who struggled with English, language, and technology barriers.
The agency specialized in trips to Asian countries. Nath recalled challenging times, including natural disasters like the 2001 Gujarat earthquake and the stress of the Covid-19 pandemic. He even wrote his mobile number on the shop door during lockdowns to continue assisting clients.
Since announcing his retirement, which is effective March 31, 2026, Nath has received messages from customers worldwide, including the USA, Australia, and New Zealand. These messages reflect the deep appreciation for his decades of support, with many former community members expressing how much they will miss him.
