10 Mar
Summary
- A new community shop will open in Derby's Market Hall.
- The shop aims to help those struggling with the rising cost of living.
- A membership scheme will provide virtual credit for essentials.

The Derby Food 4 Thought Alliance is launching 'The Thoughtful Shop' in Derby's Market Hall to aid those facing food insecurity. This new community shop will operate on an upper floor, with an opening scheduled for next month. The initiative will utilize a membership scheme to provide support.
Members referred through the alliance will receive virtual credit, allocated based on household size, to purchase everyday essentials and pre-owned school uniforms. This approach is designed to offer support in a more dignified manner, according to the charity's chief executive, Paul Brookhouse.
Brookhouse highlighted the urgency of such initiatives, noting that the charity had already distributed 116,104 food parcels since 2020. He stressed that the rising cost of living disproportionately affects working households, where incomes are often insufficient to cover monthly expenses.
Debbie Jones, senior project coordinator, stated that this venture represents a significant step forward for the alliance in its mission to support the city's residents. A donation box will also be available on the ground floor for community contributions.
