Elderly Animals Face Eviction: Sanctuary Needs New Home
27 Jun
Summary
- Nonprofit needs to relocate 37 cats, 8 dogs, and 6 farm animals.
- The sanctuary has operated for 40 years and must move by September 30th.
- The organization is seeking community help and donations for relocation.

Journey's End, a DeLand nonprofit, is in urgent need of a new location to house dozens of elderly and disabled animals. For approximately 40 years, the sanctuary has provided a haven for cats, dogs, pigs, and sheep that are otherwise difficult to place. Currently, the organization shelters 37 cats, 8 dogs, 3 pigs, and 3 sheep.
The nonprofit's current 5-acre property on Mercers Fernery Rd. is slated for new development by its owner. Consequently, Journey's End received a notice last month requiring them to vacate the premises by September 30th. This leaves the organization with mere months to secure a suitable new site.
Vice President Mary Lou Dean expressed the critical nature of their situation, stating, "It's frightening to think we have nowhere to go at this point." The organization is actively working with realtors to find a new property, ideally at least 3 acres for their farm animals to graze, but costs are proving higher than anticipated. Journey's End is appealing to the community for assistance, accepting donations, and asking anyone with knowledge of available property in West Volusia to contact them at 386-469-9124.
