D.C. Music Venues Unionize: Employees Gain Collective Voice

On November 10, 2025, IMP, the operator of several iconic music venues in Washington, D.C., announced that it would voluntarily recognize the unionization efforts of its over 300 employees at the 9:30 Club, The Anthem, The Atlantis, and Lincoln Theatre. This move comes after workers at these venues petitioned the company last month to form a union with Unite Here Local 25.

In a memo to staff, IMP's COO Donna Westmoreland acknowledged the need to "collectively strengthen our workplace, improve communication, and chart a sustainable future." She stated that while the union will fundamentally change the relationship between management and employees, the company understands the majority of workers have expressed a desire for union representation.

The bargaining unit will include employees across production, food service, box office, and door staff at all four venues. While Unite Here Local 25 will primarily represent the workers, the grassroots effort also received assistance from IATSE Locals 22 and 868.

This development marks a significant milestone for the employees of these renowned music hubs, which have hosted iconic acts like Nirvana, R.E.M., and the Red Hot Chili Peppers over the years. The unionization push aims to address the widening gap between venue management and staff, ensuring a more collaborative and equitable future for all.
