18 Jul
Summary
- Curaleaf is the first company to supply medical cannabis in Spain.
- Spain's new law allows standardized THC and CBD cannabis preparations.
- Preparations will be available through hospital pharmacies soon.

Curaleaf has made history as the first cannabis company to provide standardized medical cannabis preparations in Spain. This groundbreaking move grants the U.S.-based company a significant first-mover advantage within the country and strengthens its position in the European pharmaceutical medical cannabis market.
The Spanish Agency of Medicines and Medical Devices has approved two cannabis preparations developed by Medalchemy, Curaleaf's Spanish manufacturing subsidiary. These preparations are THC-dominant and CBD-dominant, marking a key step in Spain's implementation of its new medical cannabis law.
This new law, effective last year, permits patients with specific severe health conditions to access standardized medical cannabis treatments. While cannabis flowers are excluded, hospital specialists can prescribe these approved formulas, which will be dispensed exclusively through hospital pharmacies in due course.
Previously, access to medical cannabis in Spain was limited to exceptional authorizations, with only European Medicines Agency-approved drugs available. This update ensures broader access to standardized treatments for many patients.
Spain has emerged as a major cannabis producer in Europe, exporting substantial quantities annually. In 2025, the country exported 22 tons as of September, contributing significantly to the sector's export revenue.
