New Yutong Buses Offer Hope for Cuban Transport
23 Aug
Summary
- Four new Yutong buses arrived in Holguín and Las Tunas this week.
- These buses offer improved fuel efficiency and passenger comforts.
- Their arrival provides limited relief amid Cuba's severe transport crisis.

This week, the provinces of Holguín and Las Tunas received four new Yutong buses each, intended for routes to Havana. These additions are part of the Ministry of Transport's acquisition of 20 buses, funded by the Transportation Development Fund.
In Holguín, the buses will serve the Holguín-Havana route, departing three times weekly. In Las Tunas, they replace older, decade-old buses and will accommodate 42 passengers, offering modern amenities like seat-side phone chargers and entertainment systems. These new buses are notably more fuel-efficient, consuming half the fuel of older models and boasting low oil consumption.
The delivery occurs during Cuba's most significant interprovincial transport crisis, with a low operational rate of the national fleet. Frequencies have been reduced, and the Ministry has acknowledged issues with its ticket allocation system, leading to a return to in-person sales. This situation is exacerbated by a dramatic decline in national bus production over recent years, with a projected sharp decrease in manufactured units by 2026.
