Costco Thrives: Loyalty Boosts Traffic Despite Price Hikes
3 Aug
Summary
- Costco's loyal members drive sales and retention.
- Recent changes like fee hikes and food court restrictions boosted engagement.
- Increased foot traffic led to store overcrowding, prompting expansion.

Costco has cultivated a remarkably loyal membership base, a key driver of its sales and retention success. UBS Analyst Michael Lasser noted that Costco excels in delivering value and convenience, identifying customer traffic as the premier indicator of retail loyalty, a metric the warehouse club consistently achieves.
Despite strategic decisions in September 2024, such as raising membership fees and limiting food court access to members only, data from Placer.AI suggests these changes have positively impacted engagement and customer growth. Visit momentum remained strong into January 2026, with both total and same-store visits showing healthy year-over-year increases throughout the latter half of 2025.
This sustained increase in foot traffic has created a challenge of store overload. In response, Costco's CFO Gary Millerchip discussed initiatives aimed at spreading customer visits more evenly, including extended hours at gas stations. Additionally, the company has opened warehouses earlier exclusively for its Executive members.
Costco is also investing in physical improvements, with CEO Ron Vachris mentioning two warehouse relocations completed this year, each to larger sites offering more parking and expanded gas stations. One additional relocation is planned for Q4 to enhance the member experience and accommodate increased volume.
